Having sex during pregnancy is one thing to keep as an open discussion with your midwife. By the way, if you don’t feel comfortable discussing this or other important pregnancy issues with your midwife or doctor then you may want to re-think your provider choice. That’s not worth the risk if you ask me.

Here are some things to consider for sex during pregnancy, but always talk to your midwife or doctor for more in depth information on your specific pregnancy care needs.

Sex During Pregnancy Tips:

  1. Talk to your spouse – Keep communication lines open and work together, and make sure you’re both on the same page with your expectations. You have the opportunity to grow closer as a couple when you communicate together about your intimate relationship.
  2. Sex with your spouse can be absolutely safe in a healthy pregnancy. Amniotic fluid surrounds your baby and the uterus muscles offer additional support to baby along with a plug of mucus which covers and protects the cervix.
  3. Some sexual positions will be more comfortable than others, and it can be fun exploring with your partner which positions feel the best.
  4. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, that may limit your sexual activities. Instead, explore other forms of intimacy like kissing, massaging and ways that help make each other feel as comfortable and loved as possible.
  5. Sex can be a great way to burn some calories, AND can even increase your immune system since it elevates your body’s IgA antibodies that can even keep colds and flus away.
  6. Your hormones get a boost during pregnancy, and many women claim they experience an increase in their sexual drive and report having MORE orgasms. If you didn’t know already, orgasms cause release of endorphins which helps both mother and baby to be less stressed, happy and able to relax.
  7. Having sex during pregnancy can help improve your self-esteem and keep you from overthinking about the changes your body is going through.

Overall, sex during a healthy pregnancy offers little to no risk on baby or mother and can really be a fun experience with you and your spouse. If you have been confirmed as having a high-risk pregnancy, just remember, pregnancy doesn’t last forever, and you can do this. These tips should help you and your spouse have the right expectations upfront and throughout the duration of your pregnancy.
